Here's my little horoscope from yesterday, September 2nd from the DailyOm:

The reason that I want to write about this one in particular is because of last night. Andy, Eliot and I went to dinner with a friend of Andy's. He asked us how we like Portland, everyone always asks us how we like Portland, so that's not the notable part. I said some cast-off remark like, "I really need to meditate on where we should go." Andy's friend quickly and nicely suggested that it's not "where" it's "what", the questions to ask are things like "what do we want in a place?" and so on.

I don't read my horoscope every day, some days I just delete it without a second thought but this one got to m a little. Especially the line, "Our dreams for the future are the wishes of our souls." I'm all over that thought. I have a vision board that I've been fine tuning, I pay attention to my dreams, my gut, and my heart. And today something hit me with a surprising voice and the Bay Area, northern California is resonating with me. Unless of course McCain gets into office, then we're heading to another country for a spell.

So, hubby- what's next?

It all comes down to you

I went to see Paul Nison speak tonight and here are three strong messages I got from the evening:

1. Anything you love you have discipline for

2. Formula for health: Power - Obstruction = Vitality

3. Enthusiasm is very important!

Nison is a raw foods chef, author, teacher (notably at the HIppocrates Institute in Florida), speaker and he cured himself of Crohn's disease through eating a raw foods diet. He's been a raw foodist for over 15 years. Nison says it's not for everyone but believes strongly that people should eat more greens, sleep and get exercise. He was very funny and had a strong New Yorker accent which I really like to listen to! Apparently he's a religious man and some are turned off by him. In my opinion his beliefs definitely came through but were not distracting from his very interesting back story and present ideas.

As for the above his points were often punctuated by humor. For instance number one, and I'm paraphrasing, anything you love you have discipline for- if you like to watch American Idol and you want to see who's getting eliminated this week- you make the time to do it. So make time to eat well and get sleep! And my number two- the obstructions he's referring to are foods that don't digest well, in this case being a raw vegan he's talking about eating animals and animal products. But even more important are the stressful obstructions in our lives and the toll they take on our health and well being. Everything from watching the news to a tone in someones voice. Worry worry worry. Eating too late at night, needing stimulants in the morning to wake up and then throughout the day to keep you going and then you're so exhausted by the end of the day that you collapse but you can't sleep. As for number three, with any change in your life you've got to have enthusiasm! You must be excited and want it because then you will truly do it!

Like Michael Pollen- more of the same overall message- eat less each day and make sure it's organic. Mentioning also the abundance of good food you can find in Oregon.

I think I'll check out his book reviews on Amazon and his website. He speaks all over so check him out if he's in your area!

Just to be alive...

I put my sweet boy to bed tonight after saying goodnight to my husband on the phone. So proud of my geeky rock star husband and of my ever delightful son. I came downstairs and got sucked into Dateline with Anne Curry's story about mental institutions in Serbia.

New parents in Serbia of mentally and physically challenged children are encouraged to never meet their baby and hand them over, never to see them again. Children and adults are placed in institutions that made me want to weep and vomit. People of all ages are tied up, over drugged, and forced to live in unbelievable conditions. No money, not enough professionals and many excuses followed. I tried to gently shake off the images by browsing the internet and turning on a movie.

I was inspired to write a poem after watching just the first ten minutes of a film I'd never heard of before called, Evening. The insecurity, the beauty, the boundless love, the connectedness of everything and everyone. These were my thoughts:

Inspired by Evening

Does everyone have this big white house in their dreams?
We are all made of memories
and of the people and places that have touched our skin
I hope I'm not the words that have fallen from my mouth.

Do we all look how we feel?
Because the face I see in pictures is one I've never connected to
its changes and shapes and colors are not me
How much can my soul be revealed through my lashed windows?

In a quiet place I find towering waters that I have leaped and flown over
by choice and a hard beating heart
Now haunted by tied up children in cribs they will never leave
until a hillside in Serbia where they will be forgotten.

My peace is their peace
so I watch over my child
for myself the only love I understand.
Amazed each moment that my husband still loves me.

I am so angry. It doesn't help that I'm hungry. Nutshell, the gourmet vegan restaurant in Portland is no longer vegan. I'm so disappointed. Big poop on them for being big quitters in the important evolution of dining, options, creativity and conviction. A big step backwards for Portland.

I just had to mention, my four year old son Eliot just came to sit next to me and asks, "Is Roz on the island yet?" My kid is so cool.

Just before this he was telling me about airplanes and then he asked me, "Are you diffused?" What he means is, 'confused', but he always says 'diffused. hehe
